Gold Triangle - Hypsopygia costalis. A micro moth species from the family of Pyralidae, subfamily Pyralinae . The moth has a wingspan of 16 to 23 mm. This beautiful little moth has two distinctly different resting postures. In one, the moth adopts a 'triangular' shape, with the hindwings hidden by the forewings. At complete rest, all four wings are splayed out and the tip of the abdomen is tilted upward. The moth is found, flying in from July to September, it is mainly nocturnal and is attracted by bright lights. Its habitat is in gardens, woodlands, and farmland. The species' life history is that the larvae feed on dry vegetable matter, such as haystacks and thatch. This species is widespread and classified as common in the UK.
