Hello, from Steve Garten and welcome to my weird and wonderful world of moths.

Iā€™m amateur Lepidopterist, I trap and record moth species on my six acre wildlife meadow at Tibenham Norfolk, UK.

The list of moths listed in this Macro-moths blog and the Micro Moths blog are the species I have recorded since 2015.

Silver Y - Autographa gamma.

Silver Y - Autographa gamma. A macro moth species from the family of Noctuidae sub family Plusiinae. It has a distinctive unbroken metallic silver 'Y' mark on the brown and grey marbled forewing, which sometimes has a purple tinge. The moth has a wingspan of 35-40 mm. The adults can be found from spring through till late autumn, and can be seen by day as well as at night, when they regularly visit light. They can turn up in thousands under the right conditions, especially at coastal migration watch-points. Recent research shows the Silver-Y flies at altitudes of up to 1.2km when migrating! The moth's habitat favours various habitats. The larva foodplants are a wide range of low plants such as Nettles. The moth is common immigrant classified nationally as a immigrant species of the UK.
