Hello, from Steve Garten and welcome to my weird and wonderful world of moths.

Iā€™m amateur Lepidopterist, I trap and record moth species on my six acre wildlife meadow at Tibenham Norfolk, UK.

The list of moths listed in this Macro-moths blog and the Micro Moths blog are the species I have recorded since 2015.

Red Underwing - Catocala nupta.

Red Underwing - Catocala nupta. A macro moth species from the family of Erebidae sub family Erebinae. Unmistakable large moth, but check the colour of the underwing carefully as other, scarcer species such as Light Crimson Underwing and Dark Crimson Underwing can be easily missed. The moth has a wingspan of 65-75 mm. The moth as one generation from August to October. The moth's habitat favours woodland, scrub, riverbanks and gardens. The larva foodplants are Willow and Poplar. The moth is classified nationally as a common species of the UK.
