Iā€™m amateur Lepidopterist, I trap and record moth species on my six acre wildlife meadow at Tibenham Norfolk, UK.

Puss Moth - Cerura vinula.

Puss Moth - Cerura vinula. A macro moth species from the family of Notodontidae subfamily Cerurinae. Named after the cat-like appearance of the adult moth, which is white, and marked with darker greys. The moth has a wingspan of 45-70 mm. The moth as one generation from May to July. The moth's habitat favours Gardens, hedgerows, and open woodland. The larva foodplants are Poplars and willows. The caterpillars, which are seen from July to September, are up to 65mm long, and bright green with purple and white markings. When threatened they can rear up, revealing a red and black 'face' before shooting out formic acid! .The moth is classified nationally as a common species of the UK.
