Hello, from Steve Garten and welcome to my weird and wonderful world of moths.

Iā€™m amateur Lepidopterist, I trap and record moth species on my six acre wildlife meadow at Tibenham Norfolk, UK.

The list of moths listed in this Macro-moths blog and the Micro Moths blog are the species I have recorded since 2015.

Pine Hawk-moth - Sphinx pinastri.

Pine Hawk-moth - Sphinx pinastri. A macro moth species from the family of Sphingidae subfamily Sphinginae. Locally distributed mainly in southern and eastern England, where it is believed it first settled in Suffolk, being well-established there in the 19th century. A fairly nondescript member of the hawk-moths, the greyish brown wings usually have three or four dark streaks The moth has a wingspan of 65-80 mm. The moth as one generation from May to August. The moth's habitat favours coniferous woodland and areas where Scots Pine is present. The larva, which is rather more colourful than the moth, feeds on the needles of Scots Pine The moth is classified nationally as a local species of the UK.
