Mouse Moth - Amphipyra tragopoginis.

Mouse Moth - Amphipyra tragopoginis. A macro moth species from the family of Noctuidae subfamily Amphipyrinae. Plain-looking moth, with three dark dots on the forewing, the ground colour is dark brown with a distinct glossy sheen. The moth has a wingspan of 33-38 mm. The moth as one generation from July to September. The species frequently visit sugar as well as light. If disturbed, they will scuttle away mouse-like rather than take flight. The moth's habitat favours gardens, woodland, sand dunes, moorland and fens. The caterpillars feed on a variety of herbaceous plants, including flowers, as well as trees such as Willow. The moth is widespread and classified nationally as a common species of the UK.
