Hummingbird Hawk-moth - Macroglossum stellatarum. A macro moth species from the family of Sphingidae sub family Macroglossinae. Regular visiting migrant that closely resembles a hummingbird. It flies in the sunshine and hovers in front of flowers, sipping the nectar with its long proboscis, Unlike most hawk-moths, this is largely a day-flying species. The moth has a wingspan of 40-50 mm. It can be seen from June to August. It has been recorded in winter, and is known to hibernate, and therefore spring records may refer to overwintering individuals rather than new immigrants. Mainly diurnal, The moth’s habitat favours gardens, parks and other areas where its food plants occur.
