Hello, from Steve Garten and welcome to my weird and wonderful world of moths.

I’m amateur Lepidopterist, I trap and record moth species on my six acre wildlife meadow at Tibenham Norfolk, UK.

The list of moths listed in this Macro-moths blog and the Micro Moths blog are the species I have recorded since 2015.

Grey Shoulder-knot - Lithophane ornitopus.

Grey Shoulder-knot - Lithophane ornitopus. A macro moth species from the family of Noctuidae sub family Xyleninae. The bold, black, antler-like mark at base of the forewing is characteristic. The most likely confusion species is Blair's Shoulder-knot. The moth has a wingspan of 32-38 mm. The adults emerge in September and October, and overwinter, appearing again from February to April. The moth’s habitat favours broad-leaved woodland and parkland. The caterpillars, like several other Lithophane species, have a tendency towards cannibalism. The foodplant is Oak. The moth is widespread and classified nationally as a common species of the UK.
