Elephant Hawk Moth-Deilephila elpenor

Elephant Hawk-moth - Deilephila elpenor. The moth is from the family of Sphingidae – subfamily ---- Macroglossinae. The English name of this moth is derived from the caterpillar's that are tapered like an elephant's trunk with two large eyespots and grow to 70mm long. It Is a medium to large-sized macro moth, with a wingspan of 45 to 60 mm. The species as one generation and its flight season are May to August. The moth occurs in a wide range of habitats including, hedgerows, gardens, woodland edges, heathland, rough grassland and sand-dunes. The species overwinters as a pupa, The larva appears from late June to September. The larvae feed mainly on Rosebay Willowherb but also other plants, including Bedstraw. The moth is classified nationally as a Common species of the UK.
