White Satin Moth - Leucoma salicis. A macro moth species from the family of Erebidae subfamily Lymantriinae. The glossy surface of the wings gives rise to this moth's English name. The female is larger than the male. This moth has black and white ringed legs and entirely white hair on the abdomen. The moth has a wingspan of 37-50 mm. The moth as one generation from July to August. The moth's habitat favours Poplar and Willow plantations but is also found in hedgerows, gardens, and parks. The colourful larvae are covered with white heart-shaped blotches and feed on Willow and various Poplars. The moth is widespread and classified nationally as a Common species of the UK.
