Hello, from Steve Garten and welcome to my weird and wonderful world of moths.

Iā€™m amateur Lepidopterist, I trap and record moth species on my six acre wildlife meadow at Tibenham Norfolk, UK.

The list of moths listed in this Macro-moths blog and the Micro Moths blog are the species I have recorded since 2015.

Vapourer - Orgyia antiqua.

Vapourer - Orgyia antiqua. A macro moth species from the family of Erebidae subfamily Lymantriinae. Males are chestnut brown with a white spot on each wing. The females are virtually wingless, an attribute normally associated with winter-emerging species. The moth has a wingspan of 25-30 mm. The moth as one generation from July to August. The moth's habitat favours urban gardens and parks, open woodland, fens, hedgerows, heathland, and moorland. The female lays her eggs on what remains of the pupal cocoon, which then overwinters. When hatched, the very hairy caterpillars feed on a range of deciduous trees and shrubs. The moth is classified nationally as a Common species in the UK.
