I’m amateur Lepidopterist, I trap and record moth species on my six acre wildlife meadow at Tibenham Norfolk, UK.

Herald - Scoliopteryx libatrix.

Herald - Scoliopteryx libatrix. A macro moth species from the family of Erebidae sub family Scoliopteryginae. Quite a spectacular species that resembles a shrivelled leaf when resting. It has a distinctive wing shape and bold wing markings. Overwinters as an adult and as a result, can be one of the last species to be seen in one year and one of the first in the next. It is also sometimes found hibernating inside barns and outbuildings. The adults are attracted to both light and sugar. The moth’s forewing is 19 to 23 mm. The moth as one generation August to November. March to June after hibernation, The moth’s habitat favours open broadleaved woodland, hedgerows, parks and gardens. The larvae feed on Willow and Poplar. The moth is classified nationally as a common species of the UK.
